In the early 2000’s, a small group of Okanagan organic farmers decided to provide more diversity to their crops by introducing ancient grains such as spelt. They desired to grow non-GMO, chemical-free crops while providing access to locally grown, healthy food in an earth-friendly way.
Ancient grains are harvested differently from modern wheat, requiring a de-hulling process during cleaning. This is where Fieldstone Organics comes in. Our cleaning facility was established to enable these unique crops to be cleaned and marketed as organic food. Organic farming calls for diversity and crop rotation. That’s why Fieldstone Organics now buys and cleans over 25 different crops ranging from wheat and ancient grains to seeds and legumes.
As the demand for healthy food continues to grow, we source from our close network of BC farmers along with growers in Alberta and Saskatchewan. We choose to source only from Western Canada as we feel that this makes the most environmental sense. It lessens the environmental footprint, brings consumers, farmers, and their food into closer contact with the land, and decreases unnecessary consumption of energy required for long-range transportation.
