Proper storage is key for keeping grains and legumes healthy and safe to eat. That’s why the team at Fieldstone Organics has put together some storage tips to help you keep our products healthy until you’re ready to use them.Â
Where should whole grains, seeds, and legumes be stored?
In a clean, dry, low light, and cool storage area at a temperature between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius. When in doubt, store products in your fridge or freezer.
What should whole grains, seeds, and legumes be stored in?
Fieldstone Organic’s packaged grains, seeds, and legumes come in food-grade packaging that allows them to breathe. It’s important to store these packages in a clean area that is protected from pests. In this environment, they are storable in their original packaging so long as you are checking on them at least twice per month. Smaller quantities for daily usage can be stored in jars in your kitchen.
Do I need to rinse whole grains, legumes, and seeds before use?
Rinsing is not required for milling, cooking whole, or flaking.
Whole grains, legumes, and seeds being sprouted or soaked, such as sprouted lentils and grains for salads, should be rinsed prior to sprouting. See our sprouting page for more information. If our whole grain cereals are to be soaked and then eaten, rinse your serving portion prior to starting the soaking process. See our cereals and seeds page to learn more.
How long can I store whole grains, legumes, and seeds?
Most whole grains and legumes remain stable for an indefinite period, if stored in the right conditions. Store them in a clean, dry, low light, and cool storage area and rotate your supply. It is ideal, if you are actively using the products and refilling your kitchen containers every few weeks from your source, as you’re opening the bags to allow the product to breathe and to check on their condition. It is reasonable to store whole grains and legumes for at least a year in their original bags under clean, cool, and dry conditions.
Do all grains and seeds have the same shelf life?
As oats are a softer grain, regular turnover—ideally within 6 months—is recommended. Flax is an oily seed and should also be purchased based on quantities suitable to your needs and used within 6 months. Buckwheat is also best used within 3 to 6 months. Oats, flax, and buckwheat are best stored in their whole form, not ground. Storage in a clean, dry, low light, and cool storage environment is required.
What is the shelf life of whole grain flour once it’s ground?
Whole grain flour has the most nutritional content when freshly ground. For this reason, it is always best to grind whole-grain flour on demand using a domestic mill. If flour is freshly ground and oats are freshly flaked for the purpose of storing, they should be placed in an airtight container in the freezer and used within 2 to 3 months or stored in the fridge and used within one month.
